Service Women’s Action Network – SWAN

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Veterans Radio. Join us this week as we talk with guests from the Service Women’s Action Network, Fisher House Michigan, and the Michigan Chapter of the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America.

The Service Women’s Action Network is here to ensure that military women – past present and future – have the support they need to serve our country and care for their families. Most recently, SWAN has been on the frontlines in expanding family planning services for service women and protecting their privacy rights on social media. We are working tirelessly to be the voice of all military women – active duty and veteran – in the media, on Capital Hill and with the new Administration.

Eisenhower Center and LPGA

Shannon Adams, Community Leader, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America joins us to promote the upcoming fundraiser for the Eisenhower Center. The LPGA Volvik Championship and Eisenhower Center have partnered together to create a unique event to raise awareness for the needs of female military veterans. The world’s best female professional golfers will be in Michigan for the second annual Volvik Championship May 22-28. To kick off tournament week, LPGA professionals will participate in a special Pro-Am golf competition on Monday, May 22, at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base golf course. They invite female military veterans to play alongside the LPGA professionals in the Pro-Am. Several high-ranking military officials are scheduled to attend the event. This is an empowering event for female veterans.
IAVA is looking to support this event and partner with the Eisenhower Center and Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors. If you are a female veteran and would like to participate in this event, please RSVP. Further information for obtaining access to Selfridge will be communicated.

Fisher House of Michigan

The mission of Fisher House Michigan is to provide temporary accommodations for veterans, military personnel and their families while the veteran is receiving medical attention at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.

Our guest is Foundation Director Kate Melcher. As an Army captain, Kate Melcher flew a $20M Apache attack helicopter, worked as the Legislative Liaison Officer for the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C., served as an aide to US Senators Joe Biden, Bill Nelson, and Mark Pryor, and began her career as an intern to Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.

Now, Kate will help lead the mission of raising the money to gift a Fisher House to the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.
